Land Cruising
For those who are interested in something other than boating, we formed the CYC LANDCRUISERS.
Members of the Clearwater
Yacht Club travel not only by sea. They can be found traveling across
the country by land in Motor Coaches. An organization, unique to Clearwater
Yacht Club, and named The CYC Landcruisers, is a loosely joined group
of Club members (committed to the least amount of "corporate"
structure necessary) dedicated to the following principles:
1. Enjoy our club membership
2. Enjoy our fellow members
3. Travel as frequently as we can to as many places as we can in our Motor Coaches
Most Landcruisers have, over the years, been boaters and active in the many
boating programs the Club has to offer. While some continue to maintain
their water borne vessels, those who have "retired" from the
boating scene still have the yearning to travel. The Landcruisers have
the desire to go places and not share the unknowns of the weather, the
tides, the currents, the winds and those issues that require something
called "work" which is commonly attached to boating.
Except for the months of June, July and August, when most members are off to cooler climes
in their coaches, the group meets monthly at the club for dinner, fellowship,
exchange of information and the planning of Land Cruises. Information
on routes to take and those to avoid (i.e. low bridges), new mechanical
and electronic gadgets to make land cruising more fun and good RV parks
to visit are frequently topics of discussion.
Usually there are six to nine cruises per year planned. For each cruise a "Wagon
Master" volunteers to select a site, round up the cruisers, and
in general see to the smooth operation of the cruise. The Wagon Master
role is rotated so no one has to do it all of the time.
On arrival evening the group has its regular food fest. Each participant brings along their
favorite dish and everyone shares. Some cruises take on the spirit of
whatever holiday is celebrated around the cruising time, e.g.: Valentines
day, Thanksgiving etc. Membership varies around 12 to 14 couples and
individuals. No cruise is obligatory, no rules are instituted, just
fun with folks of a like interest.
Members have traveled from home base to Nova Scotia and Canada in the northeast
and to California and Alaska in the west and northwest and about every
state in between. As a group, we have joined the Club boaters for their
annual get-together at Bahia Beach, watched a shuttle launch from Cape
Canaveral, visited distant FCYC locations, experienced the inner workings
of the Daytona Speedway, enjoyed museums, flea markets, professional
shows (including Glenn Campbell at Florida’s only Canyon location),
survived a visit to Mouse Land and have done some just plain relaxing
at Rally Park.
You can see we are not just a Yacht Club, and all new members who have an RV or are interested
in the RV life style are welcome to join the group at its monthly dinner meeting.
Contact the Club secretary for information as to dinner meeting dates and for a list
of current Landcruiser members. Since the group is unstructured, please
call any member for information on meetings, topics and Landcruising.

classes of membership and how to join.
